John grew up in North Bay, Ontario, where he was an active member of the community. He was a competitive Flat Water Canoe racer and competed successfully at the National Level with the North Bay Canoe Club. Additionally, he was involved with the Alpine Ski community as a certified Ski Instructor and Coach. His experiences as a competitive athlete instilled a strong sense of the importance of team and the role of individual excellence in the success of the whole. He started his career in the automotive and rental industry with Murdoch Group Inc in 1993 in the rental branch. He was with them through numerous transitions including from Tilden to National and ultimately to the sale of Murdoch Group to Enterprise in 2009. His experience took him from the rental counter and cleaning vehicles to managing all aspects of the business including the Rental Operations, Fleet Acquisition and Remarketing and Sales and Leasing. In 2009, John lead the integration of Murdoch Group into Enterprise across Canada kick-starting their Canadian Fleet Management Division and the launch of Truck Rental.
